Latin Name: Cananga Odorata
Extraction: Steam distilled from flowering tops.
Aroma: Heady, sweet floral, deep, exotic Jasmine-like aroma.
BOTANY
Native to Southeast Asia, Philippines and Indonesia; and now cultivated in Madagascar and Comoro Islands, Ylang Ylang tree can grow up to 20 meters in height. It is evergreen with large shiny ovate leaves with brittle wood and drooping branches. The essential oil is derived from steam distillation of the plant’s flowering parts.
There are 5 diversifications of the oil. The oil derived from the first 1-2 hours of the distillation process is called ‘Extra’. The next I, II, III grades are obtained in the subsequent hours by fragments of time specifically determined. The Ylang-ylang ‘Complete’ is rolled-out after undergoing almost 6-20 hours of the distillation process.

USES IN AROMATHERAPY
Mind/Emotional:
Ylang Ylang essential oil is adored for its ability to boost libido and enhance the sensual needs and euphoric emotions. As an aphrodisiac, it can balance male and female sexual energies or hormones in the body by stimulating the adrenals and thymus glands to bring harmony, pleasure and passion in relationships. For a romantic blend, Ylang Ylang blends well with exotic oils such as Jasmine, Rose, Neroli, Clary Sage and Vetiver.
Indicated for impotence and frigidity, it may be used by people with fear, anxiety and other mental or emotional factors that lead to sexual inhibitions.
Energetically, Ylang Ylang is a cool or ‘Yin’ oil. It is exceptionally effective for depression and valuable in treating nervous tension, stress, sadness, anxiety, panic, shock, insecurity, fear, anger and insomnia.
Its exotic and rich floral scent is stunningly delicate and comforting to both our mind and body. By calming and relaxing the central nervous system, it helps to regulate adrenaline flow which can promote positive feeling of optimism, cheerfulness and self-esteem.
Those in need of Ylang Ylang tend to angry and like to throw tantrums, have low self-esteem and in constant denial, feel insecure and lose interest in work, family, friends and even themselves.
Body/Physical:
Ylang Ylang essential oil supports and balances our hormones, making it useful for PMS and mood swings, heavy period, cramping or insomnia associated with heavy or painful periods. You may blend it into your massage oil as a uterine tonic and apply over the abdomen and lower back.
Its hormonal benefits work in conjunction with its nervine and hypotensive qualities. It is believed to normalize heart rate and balance high blood pressure or hypertension, rapid breathing, heart palpitation, nervous tension, anxiety and irritability.
A research demonstrated Ylang Ylang’s useful role in treating epilepsy. A massage blend with Ylang Ylang, Lavender, Chamomile was proven effective in inducing deeply relaxing effect, thus reducing the frequency of seizures.
Used aromatically, it can be blended with Mandarin/Orange, Lavender and Chamomile for a children’s blend for hyperactivity and insomnia.
Traditionally, the oil is antiseptic and applied to relieve chest infection, bronchitis and spasmodic cough.
In skincare, Ylang Ylang is best known to regulate the skin production of sebum; and can prevent excess dry or excess oily skin thanks to its skin-regenerating, sebum-balancing and hydrating properties. As a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial, the oil can also be used to soothe irritation or inflammation on skin e.g. acne. It may be used as a scalp tonic to stimulate hair growth (address hair loss) and balance a greasy or dry scalp.
SAFETY & SHELF LIFE
Safety: Has GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) status. Avoid use on diseased, hypersensitive skin or children under 2 years. Dilute before using with a maximum dermal use level of 0.8%. A patch test should be performed before use for those with sensitive skin.
Pregnancy/Nursing: Pregnancy safe and nursing safe.
Precautions: Keep out of reach of children. If pregnant or under a doctor’s care, consult physician. Avoid contact with eyes. Do not use internally unless instructed by a licensed aromatherapist or physician.

HOW TO USE
Diffuse & Inhale: Breathe in your favorite essential oils using an essential oil/aroma diffuser or personal pocket inhaler.
Apply Topically: This essential oil is 100% pure and undiluted. To apply to the skin, dilute with a high quality carrier oils or Carrier Oils Complex. Refer to our dilution chart. We recommend performing a skin patch test when using a new essential oil topically.
